...I finally got a chance to see Steven Register pitch today against Detroit. It was not a save situation per say, but it still was the 9th inning in a game where the lead changed 3 times. He wound up allowing 2 hits, but no runs and was never not in control.
There is something about this guy that intrigues me. Maybe it's the fact that since he is a rule V guy, if he doesn't make the team we could lose him. With a glutton of right handed relief, including Heillman, Sanchez, Wise and Sosa there doesn't really seem to be room for Register.
This is an article from John Delcos that quotes Register as saying:
"I can sleep," Register said. "I have no problem there. I'm not dwelling on this. I can't start thinking about things I can't control. If I started doing that, it would drive me crazy.
"But if I said it never crossed my mind, I would be lying."
Register's parents, Dennis and Darlene from Columbus, Ga., taught him the virtues of the Serenity Prayer, which is why his stomach isn't churning about what the makeup of the Mets' pitching staff will look like at the end of the month.
"It's something they instilled in me," Register said after throwing a scoreless inning in Friday's 8-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. "It helps me get through tough situations. If you worry about things you can't control, then you start messing up the things you can control."
As a Rule 5 draft pick from Colorado, Register has to stay with the Mets all season or be returned to the Rockies.
"I guess you could say I'm on loan," Register said. "It really is strange. Next week I could be driving to Tucson for spring training."
It is possible Register could be optioned to New Orleans, the Mets' Triple-A affiliate, but for that to happen he'd have to clear waivers and the Rockies would have to decline to take him back.
Register, who is 24 and throws in the low 90s, saved 37 games last year for Double-A Tulsa. While he might not have gotten a real chance with the Rockies, there are enough teams that need pitching to believe somebody would take him off waivers.
"You want to believe the club you're on wants you, but I didn't have a real opportunity there," Register said about going back to Colorado. "If I go back there it would probably be Triple-A. I'd like to stay here."
